You can absolutely get sunburned in winter, and skiers prove it every January. Two multipliers do the work. Fresh snow reflects up to 80% of UV back at your face — nearly doubling your dose, from below, where sunscreen habits rarely reach. And altitude adds roughly 10% more UV per 1,000 m, because there's less atmosphere overhead to filter it. Stack the two and a modest "UV 3" ski day at 2,500 m behaves like UV 6–7 aimed at your chin.

Reflection doesn't change the forecast number — it adds a second, upward dose on top of it. That's why goggle-line burns land on the chin, nostrils, ears and lips.

Where winter UV hides
The ambush spots all share two ingredients: snow and open sky.

- Ice fishing and snowshoeing — hours on a flat white reflector with zero shade.
- Winter running and dog walks on snow — short exposures that quietly add up, day after day.
- High-latitude spring snowfields — March and April sun climbing fast over week-old snow is the sneakiest combination in a Canadian or Scandinavian year.
There's a wavelength story too. UVB — the burning kind — does drop in winter because the sun sits lower, but on snow the reflection hands much of it right back. UVA — the aging kind — barely drops across the year and sails through cloud: up to 80% of UV makes it through a thin overcast. Cold, gray and burning are fully compatible.
The classic mistakes
- Skipping SPF because it's cold. Skin doesn't feel UV as heat, and the index doesn't check the thermometer. Cold is not protection; it's just cold.
- Forgetting the underside of your face. Reflected UV arrives from below — lips, nostrils, under the chin, the ears below a beanie. Exactly the spots beach-day habits never cover.
- One application for an eight-hour ski day. Sweat inside the buff, wind and face wipes strip sunscreen; by lunch, the morning's coat is mostly gone.
The ski-day kit
- SPF 30+ on all exposed skin — including under the chin and along the jaw, where the snow shines up.
- SPF lip balm in the jacket pocket, reapplied on lifts.
- UV-blocking goggles or sunglasses — snow blindness is a corneal sunburn, and it's exactly as fun as it sounds.
